International Day for Persons
with Disabilities
This initiative seeks to:
Promote awareness and understanding
of disability issues and to mobilise
support for the rights and well-being of
persons with disabilities.
It also seeks to increase awareness of
gains resulting from the integration of
persons with disabilities in every aspect
of society.

In December 2012, the MPSD
provided financial assistance to
29
organisations
to enable them to
implement projects highlighting the
issues surrounding disabilities. The
theme selected was
“Removing
barriers to create an inclusive and
accessible society for all”.

Social Ambassadors
Via this initiative, suitable persons
will be selected to serve as Social
Ambassadors to provide awareness on
disability issues.

A committee was established to
select persons to perform the roles
of social ambassadors. Eight Social
Ambassadors have been selected
since the start of the initiative.

Persons with Disabilities (PWDs)

In an effort to sensitise the public on
the issues relating to disabilities, the
MPSD provides financial assistance
to NGOs to host local conferences,
sensitisation workshops and attend
internal conferences. In fiscal 2013,
approx.
6 NGOs
received in excess of
$200,000 collectively to implement
these initiatives.
DIVISION OF AGEING:
The Division of Ageing is the umbrella
agency with overall responsibility for the
coordination of initiatives on ageing in
Trinidad and Tobago.
