• LIFE-Sport Programme
The LIFE-sport Programme was developed by
the Ministry of Sport in 2011, in response to
increasing criminal activity by young males.
The Programme was introduced to provide an
alternative opportunity for young men ages
16 to 25, through involvement in one of three
sporting disciplines, namely football, cricket
and basketball. Participants of the LIFE-sport
Programme also benefit from a literacy and
numeracy component of the Programme,
as well as social life skills and training in
anger management, basic etiquette, time
management, conflict resolution and goal
setting. The programme has a two (2) year cycle
and the anticipated completion date is July 2014.
• Taking Sport to Rural Communities
Infiscal2014,itisanticipatedthatthisinitiativewill
be hosted in six (6) communities, with sporting
equipment provided for the enhancement of
various sporting disciplines including football,
basketball, track and field, cricket, netball and
volleyball. Identification of potential talent in
communities for further development will be
undertaken. The lives of young people in rural
areas will be enhanced through recreation, sport
and social interaction.
• Sport Caravans
In fiscal 2014, the Ministry will host six (6)
sporting caravans to build community strength,
foster independence amongst youth, train young
people in various vocational skills and coaching
in various sporting disciplines including football,
cricket, track and field, netball and volleyball.
• Relay Carnival
OnMarch9thand10th2013,theMinistryofSport
hosted Trinidad and Tobago’s (T&T’s) inaugural
Relay Carnival. This event brought together
young athletes from various countries such as
USA, Canada, Suriname and the Caribbean.
The Trinidad and Tobago Relay Carnival was
designed to mentally and physically prepare
our local athletes attending secondary schools
and colleges between the ages of (12-19) years,
to enter international competitions such as
the Penn Relays. It is envisaged that the Relay
Carnival can become amarquee annual sporting
event for Trinidad and Tobago. It is anticipated
that this event will be hosted in fiscal 2014.

• National Sport Policy
The Policy is currently under review, to ensure
its the relevance to contextual realities and to
improve the Ministry’s ability to fulfil its mission
and service delivery mechanisms. In fiscal 2014,
it is anticipated that this reviewwill be completed
and the recommendations made would be
implemented.
• Elite Athlete Assistance Programme
In fiscal 2014, the Elite Athlete Assistance Policy
Guidelines for the disbursement of funds to
High Performance Athletes will be revised to
consider the accommodation of Team Sports,
Non-Olympic Sports, Sub-elite athletes and
Flexible rankings.
• Policy for a System of Recognition
and Rewarding Outstanding Sport
Performances
The draft policy is being finalised and is
anticipated to be complete and implemented in
fiscal 2014.
