iv. Relay Carnival
On March 9th and 10th 2013, the MOS also
hosted Trinidad and Tobago’s inaugural Relay
Carnival. This event was designed to mentally
and physically prepare local athletes attending
secondary schools and colleges between the
ages of 12–19 years, to enter international
competitions such as the Penn Relays. Athletes
from various countries, including USA, Canada,
Suriname, and the Caribbean participated. It is
envisioned that the Relay Carnival will become a
marquee annual sporting event for Trinidad and
Tobago.
v. Sport Psychology Programme
In fiscal 2013, the Ministry organised the 2nd
annual Sport Psychology conference themed
“The Awakening” and “Conversations,” to target
all National Governing Bodies (NGBs). The focus
of the Caribbean Sport Psychology Conference
included quality administration, coaching
effectiveness, nutrition, cultural expectations
and mental preparation and performance.
The “Awakening” placed emphasis on the key
phrases ‘Possibility is the Only Thing – Conceive
it, Believe it, Achieve it’ and the “Conversations”
focusedonhardearnest examinationof selfhood
(self-governance, autonomy, conviction), team-
partnership and communalism (cultural and
social relatedness).
vi. Elite Athletes Assistance Programme
The Elite Athlete Assistance Programme
(EAAP) seeks to provide financial assistance
to elite athletes, assist in meeting nutritional,
transportation, training, physiological and
other needs as they strive towards improved
and sustained performances and successes at
international level. In fiscal 2013, 45 elite athletes
received TT$6,699,989 million. Since June 1,
2010, approximately TT$24,150,990 in financial
assistance was provided to elite athletes.

Optimal
Athletic
Development Programme
The Optimal Athletic Development for High
Performance in Sport Programme utilises
the ‘Gambetta Model,’ to analyse, rectify and
plan remedial programmes for progressive
improvement
toward
sustaining
High
Performance at the international level. In fiscal
2013, the following activities were conducted
under the programme:
• Development of a training programme for
the athletes using the High Performance
trining facility at the Hasley Crawford
Stadium; conduct of a workshop with the
Sport Development and Performance Unit
(SDPU) Easter camp staff on introducing
Fundamental
Movement
Skills
and
Functional Development for use in the camp
programme;
• Preparation of a Strength & Conditioning
education program for Trinidad and Tobago
(T&T);
• Development of an Athletic Development
Policy that meets the needs of the local
sporting environment.
viii. Participation in Physical Recreation and
Sport
Approximately 10,000 persons participated
in the Ministry’s sporting programmes and
activities for the fiscal 2013:
• 2,500 participants in the Community and
District Sporting Programmes;
• 4,500 participants in the Sport Caravans;
• 1,200 participants in the Easter Sport
Camps; and
• 1,700 participants in the Women and Girls in
Sport Festival
Theseprogrammes target variouscohortswithin
the national community including children,
young people, women, girls, senior citizens and
the specially challenged.
